SHE Sighting is a feature series by Yahoo! Philippines SHE about fierce females who make us sit up, take notice, and appreciate the feel-good surprises that spring from the Web or real-life chance encounters.
This is the YouTube video that was originally uploaded by Yuan Juan (under his YouTube username youngjay0918) on July 28, 2012. At around 3:30 p.m., August 11, 2012 (Manila time), the video had gotten over 182,000 views. By 11:30 p.m. of the same day, the video had 432,000 views.
In July this year, video blogger Yuan Juan chanced upon a then-unidentified young girl who appeared to be trying out the videoke microphone demonstration set-up at SM Megamall. The scene would have been just like any other random singing encounter—except it was evident that the girl who was singing the song loaded up on the videoke microphone had a voice that made mallrats stop and listen, then perhaps shake their heads in disbelief. The girl—who was clad in a T-shirt and shorts, as well as carrying a red backpack—was singing "And I Am Telling You" (a signature tune from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls) like a professional. She sounded awesome. There is just no other word for it.
Juan (under his username youngjay0918) then uploaded the video on YouTube. (Click this link to check out his YouTube channel.) Soon enough, more and more netizens got to watch the amazing performance of the "Megamall Videoke Girl." In the note accompanying the video clip, he wrote: "(I) came across this random girl (and) when I heard her sing it gave me goosebumps. You have a powerful voice! Hats-off! If (you) get a chance to watch this. Whoever (you) are! You've got it!"
Juan later updated the note and revealed that he and the girl had just met and that her name is Zendee Rose Japitana Tenerefe. Juan also added that she has her own YouTube channel. (Click this link to check out her YouTube channel.)
